This is a
general guide on how to apply vinyl stickers. Please read this instruction carefully in order to achieve proper vinyl application which will make it durable and look professional.
Remember: Clean well, Plan, and Take your time, Peel slowly.
Tools you need:
- For small vinyl’s often you don't need tools.
- It is recommended for you to have masking tape to line up your vinyls.
Vinyl Sticker Structure
Often your vinyl sticker comes with 3 layers.
1. Application tape. (Masking tape or clear film)
2. Vinyl graphics (computer cut graphic)
3. Backing paper (Slippery paper)
Sometimes the adhesive on your vinyl will take time to cure. If your vinyl peels off immediately after applying the vinyl, could mean that the adhesive hasn't been attached to the surface and requires further time to cure. It could take from 10 minutes to several hours for the adhesive to cure, depending on the vinyl type.
After applying application tape/vinyl to the surface, you may want to carefully peel small portion of your vinyl to see if it is attached to the surface or not.
Step 1: Surface Preparation:
- The surface must be clean and dry.
- It must be free from dust or dirt.
- Wipe in 1 direction only. Moving back & forth leaves dust back on the surface.
Step 2: Position
- Before sticking or peeling anything, you must decide where you are going to place the vinyl.
- You may want to mark the position with a whiteboard marker or masking tape.
- Place a mark near the surface so you can line them up together
Step 3: Peel Backing Paper
- Before peeling anything, rub front the front to make sure the vinyls are stuck to the application layer.
- Peel very slowly, watch out for any vinyl’s that doesn't lift off.
- The application layer and vinyl graphic should stay together.
- You are peeling the backing paper, NOT peeling vinyl off the backing paper.
- Make sure all vinyl pieces are lifted off from the backing paper and stuck to the application tape. If the vinyl piece doesn't lift off, rub the application tape so that vinyl sticks to the application tape, or try giving the backing paper some more "kink" angle
Note the backing paper is bent, not the vinyl:
Step 4: Stick to Surface
- Once you've peeled the backing paper off, you can now stick it to the cleaned surface.
- Make sure you rub so that the vinyl makes good contact with the surface.
For some cases, you may need to leave it for a while for the adhesive to cure.
Step 5: Peel Pre-mask
- Once the adhesive is cured, you can then peel the pre-mask off.
- If the adhesive is not cured, you will find that the vinyl will lift off with the pre-mask. If this happens, stick the application tape/vinyl back on and leave it for a while. Be patient and take your time.
- Peel very slowly; make sure no vinyls are coming off the surface.
- DO NOT peel upwards (i.e., perpendicular to the surface).
Step 7: Finish
- Once the pre-mask is off, give another rub to make sure it makes good contact with the surface.
By now you should have a great looking sticker placed just where you wanted it.
